No1 – I didnt feel prepared for a leg like this, I had looked at the old map but not in great detail and not really thought about where the start might be or what no1 might be like.
I picked up the map and set off not reading it enough crossing the rough terrain (thinned + felled area). I started to feel a lot more behind myself rather than a head. When I got to the path and though “ok I’ll go around.”
Back in the forest I was feeling unsure and not too confident so decided change my plan again and to go high to see the vegetation boundary then down the spur into the control. Didn’t think this cost me too much at the time so hoped to forget about it quick but winsplits says 70secs?

This actually knocked my confidence a bit and I tried pretty hard to focus and forget about it though the next few controls but I had a few problems with the mapping style, not making any mistakes but I was getting really close to the control and not matching the map->terrain, terrain->map up properly. So needing to slow down more than expecting and still being 10m to one side or the other. Generally feeling a bit stressed.

Settling down around 5 or 6.

Not a great line out of 7, planned to use the vegetation boundary and new it was the right of the line so drifted right looking for it (this sometimes happens when I know something is to one side or the other of the line I drift that way looking for it).
Near no7 control I saw a lad from Ärla and stayed ahead of him up to no10 but felt the speed had lifted a little, confidence seemed to be back.
But leaving not 10, he left it fast and I stopped to double check the route and he got a small gap, I thought its quite easy to stay to the line and use the vegetation changes + marsh and come into the control from the left, so I ran after him to close the gap up. We came out to the wrong vegetation boundary. Idiot! So I recalculated the route and he set off back toward my original plan and I though from here I can go right of the hill. but I didn’t see the spur I wanted to use to find the control, then saw another control in between two hills/knolls, not mine and couldn’t see where it was on the map! Then the Ärla lad was running in a strange direction to where I thought and realised he had took the control and was on his way to no12, this made me work out the what was going on. +45s (more upset about this than no1)
Then basically nail it down the hill to the finish
